Scotch and Soda

I'm really digging these looks by Scotch and Soda. It's not very weather appropriate for Sydney
as we are coming into summer. Wishing it was Fall/ Winter right now.

Tim's Tattoos: Day of the Dead Skull

Tim's tattoo

Tim's tattoo

This is my one of my favourite tattoos that my boyf has. He actually got it done for
free, at the time he was a personal trainer, and his tattoo artist asked for an exercise
plan in exchange for ink. Good bartering system if you ask me!

This Day of the Dead Skull was based off an image that Tim illustrated. But as most
hand drawn art goes, it doesn't translate well sometimes to tattoos. So it was slightly
modified, and it absolutely perfect.

Rome: Part 1

Rome

Rome

I was going through my digital camera and stumbled upon my photo's from Rome.
I remember I went there with Tim in July 2010, in the peak of summer. And it was
a scorcher indeed. We kept on refilling our water bottles from the water fountains
littered around the city. I kid you not, we drank about 5 litres and we didn't go to
the toilet because we just sweated it all out.

We stayed at a sweet bed and breakfast, where the lady who owned it kept saying 'prego'.
It had those old school lifts and staircases that you see in 1930s old Hollywood and European
films. The colosseum was three blocks down from where we were, and is quite possibly the
most amazing structure I've seen in my life. It was quite surreal to visit a place that I
remember studying in history class.

What I love about Rome is it's old city feel. It may come across dirty to some, but that's
what I like about it, that and the old ruins and Vatican City. Vatican City is amazing, Tim
pointed out a Swiss Guard that looked like Matt Damon, my heart started to palpitate.
St Peter's Basilica is something else, I felt like a tiny ant compared to the ultra high ceilings/
domes and marble statues of Popes and Saints. You would see priests walking around and then
in a flash disappear in one of the statues/ columns, as there were secret passage ways that lead
underground. Subsequently, my camera died in the Basilica which I was bummed about.

We entered the underground crypt where all the Popes are buried. That was supremely surreal.
I was so emotional when I saw Pope John Paul II burial, there was a crowd hovered in prayer,
it was a beautiful and touching sight, as he was the people's Pope and a champion of the youth.
What I also couldn't believe was seeing St Peter's crypt. That was definitely an out of body
experience, one of the last person to be in Jesus' human presence, one of the twelve apostles and
the first Bishop of Rome.  Being Catholic, it was a humbling experience visiting the Vatican City,
one I won't forget. The Sistine Chapel was amazing too, Michelangelo is seriously a genius. Tim
and I were in there for about an hour.

I have another batch of photos to post later.

Have a great weekend!

Bill Cunningham New York

I watched this on Wednesday night, courtesy of Russh Magazine's premier at Palace Verona
in Paddington. Thanks Russh!

Bill is the most hard working, inspirational and down to earth man. I have so much respect for
him as a person and his work ethic. I love that he loves fashion, but doesn't let it rule his life, or
the trappings of the industry "if you dont take the money, they can't tell you what to do".  He loves
clothes, and this is evident in the photos he takes for The New York Times.

The fact that he is in his 80s and is running around New York and all the major fashion weeks
is a testament to his dedication. He would often say (this is) "pleasure not work", now, how many
people can profess that about their jobs. He always smiles when he shoots on the streets or the
runway, you can tell he immersed in the beauty that he sees, a curated eye. I love that he still uses
film, such a rarity.

I wish I can find an excerpt of his speech for his lifetime achievement award in the arts in Paris.
It basically sums up his career. I laughed when he said "I'm not interested in celebrities and their free
dresses, I'm interested in clothes" and my eyes welted up, when he choked up towards the end of his
speech and said "if you seek beauty you will find it".

I really hope I see and meet him when I'm in New York next year.

Bill, you are an amazing man.

Open Day: Sydney Opera House

Opera-House-10

A few weeks back SOH had an open day, which a few friends and I went to. It was such a perfect day, sunny Sydney was in full effect.

I forget how beautiful the building is, amazing really. I like the foyers where you can see the skeletal
industrial cement ceiling mixed with wood, such a contrast to the tiled patterned exterior.

I just about died when I saw a mother take a photo of her son via her ipad, too funny.

Unscripted

Right, I'm so excited to announce my friend's first book, Unscripted.

Vicky was in Sydney not long ago, when she told me the news I was and STILL super PROUD of her.
I wanted to tell everyone I know about the news, but for obvious reasons I had to wait.
She described how the book cover would be, and it is exactly how I pictured it in my mind.

It will be coming out in December in all Fully Booked branches. I really can't wait to get my hands on a
copy, and I hope that they ship to Australia!

Yesterday I was invited to view the latest eyewear collections from Armani Exchange, BOSS- Hugo Boss,
Boss Orange, Carrera, Dior, Emporio Armani, Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs.

It was interesting to see what is coming out in the market. The shapes and styles that caught my eye were
non conventional, which took me by surprise as it's not the type of sunnies I would go for. I was drawn purely by the design.
The sunglasses I found most impressive were from Marc by Marc Jacobs: red circular tortoise shell,
which reminded me of bitten apples. Emporio Armani: thick circular frames with a sort of beige/brown
stripe through the dark brown body. Emporio Armani: cat eye like velvet sunglasses, yes velvet, I thought that was quite different to the normal plastic or metal body. Emporio Armani: multi coloured sunglasses, the shape was amazing, circular like Mickey Mouse ears, transparent and space age like. Dior: retro circular sunglasses that remind me of ginger bread men eyes. Hugo Boss: retro cat eye frames and vintage circlular thick framed glasses.

I find it amazing how luxury brands influence the mass market chain stores, this was evident  later in the day when I went into Sportsgirl and saw pretty much a replica of Hugo Boss' circular thick framed glasses.

I'd like to thank Skye of Trish Nicol Agency for the invitation, as well as Thomas and Mel of Safilo, it was
lovely meeting you!

Phoenix: From a Mess to the Masses

From a Mess to the Masses - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix from Voluume on Vimeo.

I really can't wait for this doco about  Phoenix during their Wolfgang Amadeus album world tour.

I was lucky enough to watch their Wolfgang Amadeus show, with my sis,  at Brixton Academy in London.
I remember I couldn't wait to clock off at work. That feeling of excitement; butterflies and anxiousness
mixed with adrenalin. They were amazing live. The light show complemented the sound and ambience.
It's rare for a band to sound super crisp live, and I'm not surprised Phoenix sounded so exceptional.
They are better than amazing.

Tati Cotliar by Jason Kibbler for Twin #5

I'm really digging this editorial for Twin. There's a young love, rock and roll vibe to it.
